Was 2020 a deadly year for pedestrians?

Posted by Brad Ponder | Aug 12, 2021 | 0 Comments

According to auto accident statistics, 2020 was not a good year for pedestrians. While walking and jogging receive positive news for their health benefits, anyone out and about near traffic takes a risk. Alabama's roads have many pedestrians and moving vehicles, which contributes to the unfortunate chances of accidents and injuries. SUVs might pose a particular risk to pedestrians, but any car could cause harm.

2020 and pedestrian injury risks

In 2020, the U.S. saw the largest pedestrian death rate increase on record. Incredibly, the tragic figures occurred during a year with fewer vehicles on the road. Sometimes, circumstances create the opposite results than what people expect.

Fewer commuters did not mean fewer accidents or crashes, possibly due to increased unsafe driving habits. With fewer vehicles traveling, a driver might think it is possible to get away with driving faster than posted speed limits. If a driver gets away with one moving violation like speeding, they may find it easier to embrace other unsafe practices on the road.

A driver might not think that distracting behaviors, such as texting while driving, are a problem. However, it only takes a split second for a driver to cause a motor vehicle or pedestrian accident.

Pedestrians and alertness

Both pedestrians and drivers will benefit by being more aware. Walkers and joggers may want to remain even more alert when in the proximity of SUVs or pickup trucks. These massive vehicles have the potential to inflict severe injuries and death when they hit someone crossing the street.

If negligence factored into a pedestrian accident, an insurance claim might cover the losses. In an incident involving an uninsured motorist, a pedestrian may turn to his or her auto insurance policy for a claim. Uninsured motorist coverage or personal injury protection may address injuries.

Anyone injured by a negligent driver could explore legal remedies to cover losses. Compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses might require insurance settlements or civil judgments.
